Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of daily life, transforming industries like healthcare, finance, and education. However, it also presents challenges related to bias, transparency, and accessibility, which can disproportionately affect certain groups. We surveyed individuals who have lived experience of sight loss to understand their interactions with and attitudes towards AI systems. Therefore, the survey covered topics like assistive technology, training, accessibility, and the impact of AI on their daily lives. Accordingly, the survey initially collected 2,391 responses, but incomplete answers, particularly around the midpoint, led to a data cleaning process. A 60% completion threshold was set, requiring participants to answer at least until question 62 to be included in the analysis. This filtering reduced the final sample size to 768 responses. Analysis of the results reveals that participants adopted assistive technologies, such as iPhones and white canes, but faced barriers, including cost and training challenges. Half of them used AI-based virtual assistants, appreciating benefits such as accuracy and independence, while others questioned AI’s reliability. Strong support existed for combining AI with human oversight. Most believed fairness in AI should be a shared responsibility. Findings highlight the need for accessible and accountable AI, as well as assistive technology and AI literacy.
