This week, Ontario Tech launched the Mindful Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (MAIRI), a new, interdisciplinary hub that positions Canada at the forefront of ethical, people-first AI. The institute is tasked with a thoughtful, intentional and inclusive approach to AI research and innovation that supports humanity and global flourishing.

MAIRI brings together experts across many disciplines, with Peter R. Lewis serving as its inaugural Director.

At the launch event, we were joined by Ministers Stephen Crawford and Nolan Quinn, as well as PA Lorne Coe. It was announced that Meta, the Candian National Institute for the Blind, Lakeridge Health, and the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences would serve as partners, and the vision for MAIRI was shared by Carolyn McGregor, Steven Murphy, and Peter.

Following the launch announcement, esteemed guests were welcomed to explore current AI research at Ontario Tech, with Ainaz, Andrew, Parisa, and Tess presenting their contributions, vision, and concerns.
